Creativity and Innovation. This is one art-filled Georgetown condo. There are a gazillion city apartment homes with precious little storage space. Visiting with Brenton in DC a few weeks back I was delighted to see her creative “storage”/centerpiece. She received a Damien Hirst inspired demitasse set for Christmas (came from the MOMA gift shop); take a look at what she did with it. PtotheS…Notice the often present Hirst skull reflecting in the cup on the far left in the pic below!

Caroline Shaw-Grammy Winner!
Well, here is the news for the day…Caroline Shaw won a G.R.A.M.M.Y. yesterday! Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance Category. Yup, no scam, just the facts ma’am!
Here’s the link http://www.grammy.com/videos/56th-grammy-awards-pre-telecast-ceremony. Scan to 1 hour and 9 minutes into the show, and you will hear Cyndi Lauper introduce Caroline and Roomful of Teeth, followed by their performance. And at 1 hour 22 minutes 50 seconds, you will hear the award announced and see their acceptance! Caroline grew up right here in Greenville; her ecstatic parents are Jon and Bob, and her proud siblings are Robert, Steven, and Nancy (who was in LA
and at the Grammy’s with her!). The grandest congratulations go out from Greenville and all of the world to Caroline and her Roomful of Teeth mates!
Let’s not forget that Caroline won the Pulitzer Prize for Music last April, making her the youngest composer to have won the award since its inception in 1943. Yessirree. This is no joke. Caroline Shaw is the real deal! Read all about it right here! Whoop Whoop!! Disclaimer…Images were snapped from the computer during the live telecast and are property of The Grammys, (with the exception of the last one, which was downloaded from the www, and is also property of The Grammys)! http://www.npr.org/blogs/deceptivecadence/2013/04/15/177348405/caroline-shaw-30-wins-pulitzer-for-music
The Feast at Bilbo Baggins’
I recently watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the rowdy Warner Brothers adventure of Bilbo Baggins being swept in to the quest to reclaim Erebor. This more than just a tad grand film was aptly directed by Sir Peter Jackson. One of the earlier scenes features an elaborate feast (and hilarious clean up session!) as Gandalf gathers his dwarves at Baggins’ home to plan the complex reclamation scheme. Check this out; I mean, these guys can flat out eat. Holy Moly!
RendezBooze!
Headed south for a RendezBooze (and other fun activities) weekend getaway with our “teeth” friends. We return to the Richardson’s beach home each year to celebrate when we all met in 1975, first year of dental school. That’s correct…thirty eight years ago! It’s one of my favorite weekends of the year. Get your party on and have a fun weekend yourselves, wherever life is taking you!
Mmm…Martini
So here’s a “Cool Martini and a Good Read”! Oil on Canvas, 14″ x 11″ by Nicole Etienne. This is in my Mother’s personal collection, a Mother’s Day gift from me when I was co-owner of City Art Gallery.
Public Art I
I’m just nuts for art in public spaces. I am pleased each time I drive uptown in Greenville and see this marvelous sculpture created by Matt Harding. It is adjacent to ECU campus and students are privileged to walk by this happy piece daily.
“Dining Room, Evening” – a painting
Dining Room, Evening ~ oil on canvas ~ artist, Karen Lawrence ~ my private collection
This is a painting that Atlanta based artist Karen Lawrence painted after spending an evening in my home. We hosted an opening at City Art Gallery for her earlier that evening and then gathered in my home for dinner afterwards. She photographed throughout the house and developed several canvases from that experience. Both of my daughters received one of Karen’s pieces for Christmas that year to remind them of the home in which they journeyed through the first couple of decades of their lives, and where they still return “home” for special family celebrations. Below are those two jewels!
